Leading Rural Nevada Organizations Announce Opposition to Question 3
Groups representing thousands of rural Nevada cattlemen, miners and their families is latest to join the Coalition to Defeat Question 3
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, August 20, 2018 — Today, the Nevada Cattlemen’s Association and Nevada Mining Association announced their opposition to Question 3, a risky Constitutional Amendment that would leave rural Nevada consumers with higher electricity rates and a less reliable electricity system.
If passed on this November’s statewide ballot, Question 3 would dismantle Nevada’s existing electricity system – one of the most affordable and reliable in the nation – and replace it with a new, unknown system established by the legislature and courts.
“We are deeply concerned that Question 3 would put Nevada’s cattlemen and our rural communities at risk,” Sam Mori, President of the Nevada Cattlemen’s Association said. “Question 3 would raise electricity rates and harm the rural electric co-op’s that Nevada farmers, ranchers, and cattlemen depend on for reliable electricity in these hard to reach areas. In order to build and preserve our local agricultural community and maintain access to affordable electricity, we urge our fellow Nevadans oppose this risky and costly ballot measure and vote NO on Question 3.”
“Nevada mines are still recovering from record losses in mineral values while costs to operate continue to climb and the timeframe to permit a new mine extends into ten years,” Dana Bennett, President of the Nevada Mining Association said. “Question 3 will create substantial uncertainty for both industrial and residential ratepayers. Adding another layer of uncertainty to the challenges already faced by miners at this time would be irresponsible,”
Other groups and organizations recently opposing Question 3 and joining the bipartisan Coalition to Defeat Question 3 include the Professional Fire Fighters of Nevada, AARP Nevada, Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers, Latin Chamber of Commerce – Nevada, Las Vegas Asian Chamber of Commerce, Urban Chamber of Commerce Nevada, Nevada Farm Bureau, the Nevada Alliance for Retired Americans, Nevada Veterans Association, Sierra Club, Natural Resources Defense Council, Southwest Energy Efficiency Project, Western Resource Advocates, and the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce among others.
